Summer is here! Time for long days on the beach (yay!), refreshing drinks, endless ice-cream and fabulous summer clothes.
Of course, with the good comes the bad and hot summer days mean plenty of sweat and melty makeup that refuses to stay put. While movies and models may try to make us believe that a sweaty face and body equals glistening, glowing skin, we know that the truth is far from that.
So, don’t let summer sabotage your perfect summer makeup. Follow these steps for a makeup that will stay fresh all day long.
Take a few moments to cool off
Are you someone who applies makeup as soon as you get out of the shower? Stop doing that. Take at least 10-15 minutes to allow your body to cool down before starting your routine.
This will result in makeup that is more polished looking and long lasting. If you don’t have the time and are in a rush, splash your face with some cold water before you start.
Moisturize your face
Let’s begin with the basics. So many of us make the mistake of skipping moisturizer in the summer, just because we think our skin doesn’t need it when it’s hot and humid outside.
The truth, however, is that your skin could end up producing more oil if it isn’t adequately moisturized. So, don’t skip this vital step.
Instead of a thick formula, try using a light water based moisturizer that won’t leave you feeling oily and heavy. You could even try a light BB cream with SPF that has the bonus of protecting you from the sun.
Put on some Primer
Think of primers as the building blocks of your makeup. Just like a wall primer is essential before you paint it, so is makeup primer for your face. It helps create a perfect, smooth canvas that you can apply your makeup on.
Primers also minimize shine throughout the day and help keep your makeup intact for a long time. It creates a barrier between your skin and foundation so that even if you sweat, your makeup is less likely to budge. Don’t also forget to dab some primer on your eyelids as well to keep your eye makeup from creasing. For the summer, it is best to use a primer that is oil-free.
Alternately, you could also try some milk of magnesia which works just as well as a primer if not better.
Foundation and Concealer
Needless to say, avoid heavy foundations and concealers when it’s hot outside. They may give you better coverage, but they’re also more susceptible to melting right off.
Choose oil-free, water-based products with a long-lasting formula. They blend easily and can be applied in thin layers for a natural looking finish. If you’re going for a dewy look, add a teeny bit of highlighter to your foundation et voila!
Skip the Powder
Even though powder will help keep the shine away, it also tends to melt and make fine lines and wrinkles more prominent during summer.
So, use very little powder or skip it altogether and use blotting paper instead to absorb excess oil from your face.
Choose Powder Blush
Summer is certainly not the season for cream blush. While it may feel luscious against your skin, it is way more likely to melt and create a mess on your face.
Choose powder blush instead or waterproof blushes for those perfect rosy cheeks.
Cheek and Lip Stain
Summer is a great time to skip blushes and heavy lipsticks and choose lip and cheek stains instead.
They are very light, and the best part is that they do not block your pores. Plus, they look gorgeous during the summer.
You can always complete the look with a waterproof lip topcoat.
For your Eyes and Brows
No one likes clumpy mascara, and smudged eyeliner and summer are infamous for resulting in just that. Choose waterproof mascara and liner that will stay put all day long, no matter how much you sweat.
Try to use minimal eyeshadow. To make your eyes look bigger, apply a nude pencil to your lower waterline. Having said that, if you must apply eyeshadow, use a damp brush that will transform your regular eyeshadow into a long-lasting one.
For your brows, choose a brow pencil with wax so that it won’t rub off when you start sweating.
Say no to Dark Colors
If you know that you’re going to have a long day out in the sun, stay away from dark smokey eyes and very dark lips.
Not only are they a bit harsh but it’s much more noticeable when darker colors melt as opposed to lighter ones.
Less is More
The best strategy to combat melty makeup in the summer is to wear less of it. Stick to the essentials.
Use a concealer for your dark circles and pigmentation. Try a BB cream with moderate coverage or a light foundation. Add some bronzer for that sun-kissed look and top it all off with waterproof mascara.
